Meeting My Characters: Is This Spooky Or What?
Ghosts from a forgotten manuscript ...

I sent off a manuscript to Matador publishers to be made into an ebook. I hadn't set eyes on this story since 2006. I'd originally sent it in paper form to a traditional publisher and they had rejected it ...
Is this spooky or what? I keep meeting the characters from this manuscript!

Feeling a little deflated at the time, I stored the manuscript in a bedroom cupboard and completely forgot about it. The problem was that the story had been too long.
I had got a bit carried away with the whole idea and it probably should have been made into two books - or shortened somehow - but when I originally embarked on self-publishing my stories, it would have cost a lot of money to have done it justice.
One rainy day, I was having one of my de-cluttering sessions and came across the manuscript entitled 'Clouds Below the Mountains'. It was a story of a travel rep based in Tenerife and I thought I would take a look at it.
"Remember, I hadn't set eyes on the manuscript since I wrote it in 2006!"
As I started reading through the chapters, things began to get spooky. The characters in it were all people that I had recently met on holiday. Not in 1996 when the story was set, nor in 2006 when I wrote it ... I had met these characters after I had returned from Australia in 2012!
There was Harry, a widower recently bereaved. He loved to chat up the ladies and lo and behold there were Doreen and Jean, elderly ladies who always went on holiday together.
Then there was the couple who had been married for 50 years. The dour husband and his dutiful wife seething inside at his treatment of her over the years. I met the newly married couple, the family who thought themselves a 'cut above' and the little boy who liked to dance at the mini disco and entertain us all.
Had it all been a dream that I had woken from, then written a story? Or is it that I am a natural observer, especially on holiday when I like to unwind? I even met the amorous waiter with the twinkly eye, although he was looking at the skimpily clad girls that were hanging around him at the pool bar.
"All these characters were in my manuscript!"
But one character from the manuscript I haven't met yet. Mikey, the very funny and animated scouser. I am wondering if that is a treat yet to come on my next sojourn to the sun.
Until next time ...
'Clouds Below the Mountains' is available in kindle format from Amazon.
Since arriving back in the U.K I have enjoyed meeting lots of people at the Author Talks and book signing events that I have been invited to. It has been great connecting with my roots again and listening to other people's stories whilst I have been doing research for my next book.
A big thank you to all the readers who have posted Amazon reviews after they have finished one of my books.
