Since coming back to the UK from Australia, I have found a big difference in people's attitudes towards self published authors. As there are not many mainstream publishers in Australia, the trend is for writers to publish their own books...
 a self publisher's product is not inferior, we just haven't had the breaks
Most writers are able to make a living from their booksales, usually via independent bookstores, literary events and belonging to author forums such as the SA Writers Club.
